splayed house
—
Lilyfield | 2016
This dwelling sits in an Inner West cul-de-sac of predominantly free-standing single storey interwar bungalows and cottages in widely varying material or colour palettes. Streetscape analysis revealed narrow or zero side setbacks as a prevailing pattern. These observations drove a design that achieves access to natural light without compromising acoustic or visual privacy all the while remaining respectfully constrained in scale. The existing front portico was retained as a memento to the streetscape. The splayed side walls act to project the new first floor as an attic, rather than the genuine first floor that it is, without compromising spatial volume. Deep window reveals provide a sense of separation from adjacent dwellings.
