POLE HOUSE

Avalon | 2021

On any block sloping steeply to the rear a single level house will project high above the ground plane. In a remnant rainforest setting this platform provides connection to tree canopies and extraordinary bird life. The existing house featured eccentrically high columns that mimicked a forest of sorts. The volume provided an opportunity to infill the space as a lower ground floor to satisfy the brief of new bedrooms, play area and access to the rear garden for a growing family. Sunlight and air flow are limited below the dense tree canopy. A series of roof light pop ups were introduced to capture morning and afternoon sunlight and promote air movement. A central void was cut through the longitudinal plan to connect the new Lower Ground Floor to these roof lights. Rather than balustrades dominating the interiors, the void was covered in rope mesh to satisfy code and provide a playful surface for children.
