Nethervale is an 1890s farm cottage with phenomenal views of the ocean. The additions respect and honour the building typology by extending to the rear and completing the symmetry of the front elevation with the extension of bullnose verandah. As varying winds are a dominant contextual element of the coastal farm site, the twin forms to the rear create a courtyard space that provides protection. While preserving the home’s original coastal charm, the proposed additions will sensitively accommodate the needs of contemporary living. The considered renovation of the existing cottage, including the reinstatement of a second chimney, will ensure its enduring presence well into a fourth century.
