ATRIUM Duo

A primary design driver for these parallel dwellings was to resolve the tension between visual privacy and the need for abundant natural light. The design response features central atriums that puncture through two storeys and reveal themselves beyond the entry. These generate substantial light and ventilation to both ends of the living areas, in turn allowing reduced glazing to side walls. Skylights are maximised to enhance natural light above stair voids, bathrooms, living and alfresco areas. The prominent location mandated that basement parking be provided for multiple vehicles, therefore, a spacious lower ground floor including additional program was created. The generous street setback allows space for considerable landscaping that ensures visual privacy while enhancing street presence. This dual occupancy balances the often conflicting needs of the site and its inhabitants by maximising the efficiency of the project footprint without compromising privacy, natural light and the surrounding landscape.
